Introducing the latest True Issues edition and a special release on state government performance
Cost of living remains the dominant issue for Australians, with more than eight in ten adults (81%) identifying it as one of the five issues or concerns requiring greater government attention. The latest True Issues also finds confidence in the direction of the national economy has reached a new low, reflecting ongoing pressure from high mortgage repayments, elevated rents and everyday household expenses. Housing supply and affordability remains a key secondary issue, followed by hospitals and healthcare, and the economy and finances. Government performance ratings remain below average, with the Albanese Government’s weakest-rated performance areas continuing to be cost of living and housing supply and affordability.

The special release examining a range of state government areas of administration provides a detailed assessment of how residents across the five largest states rate the performance of their state government overall and on managing a range of key issues. It also examines community views on whether state governments are achieving value for money from major infrastructure projects. The findings reveal substantial comparative differences between states, with South Australia and Western Australia receiving above average report cards, while Victorians are particularly critical of the performance of their state government across a range of issues.
