Our post-election survey for the Queensland Resources Council (QRC) reveals that most Queenslanders support closer cooperation between the State Government and the mining industry, with strong backing for action to help maintain the state’s competitiveness.
Conducted by our team at JWS Research with 1,500 Queenslanders, the study found that 75 per cent agree mining – including coal – is very important to maintaining Queensland’s way of life, rising to 77 per cent among regional residents. Support for the mining industry is now at its highest level since 2022, with 88 per cent agreeing the resources sector has an important long-term role in Queensland’s future.
A clear majority (57 per cent) said the State Government should either wind back the current coal royalty scheme or reach a compromise with the industry. More than half (55 per cent) believe the royalty increases are making coal mining in Queensland less competitive for investment compared with other states.
Queenslanders also expressed a strong desire for consultation and collaboration. Seven in ten (71 per cent) agreed the resources sector should be consulted on any regulatory changes, with consistent support across Brisbane, South East Queensland and regional areas.
These findings highlight broad public recognition of the resources industry’s contribution to the state’s economy – from funding essential infrastructure and services to supporting regional jobs and investment.
